Georgian Garnet Halo Brooch

Georgian Garnet Halo BroochSuper cute little garnet brooch dating from the Georgian era, circa 1780. The principal stones is a saturated, pinkish red garnet set over foil and surrounded by a halo of seed pearls and tiny, glistening old cut diamonds. It was originally a clasp (evidenced by the little slit still present along the bottom edge), but converted into a small brooch or lace pin relatively soon after it was made. and over time it was honed and refined until precious gemstones of remarkable colour and clarity could be produced for the jewellery industry

Clearly once the base of a carved steatite scarab (the drill holes are visible at the back where it's split in two)

thin rutile inclusions orientated parallel to one another on three planes)

An exquisite antique necklace set with ruby and pearl

and its legacy has been tarnished by association with fascism

Stamped 900 (silver) which suggests it was made in Germany during the late 19th century

It's vintage Italian and dates from the 1970s
