I spent hours in that position, waiting and working through subtle changes as the light moved across the canyon walls. The sun settled perfectly into the center of the frame, an alignment I couldnt have planned better myself. The canyon is steep, compressed, and unforgiving. From this vantage

Cactus thrives in these exposed environments

On rare nights

something that had not been possible for much of its recent history due to serious instability

growing low to the ground and blooming in tight clusters that resist wind and salt spray

This photograph was made in the Superstition Mountains during a brief evening visit

with many shapes only becoming recognizable under very specific conditions

becoming slick

This area sits within the Chihuahuan Desert

Letting it go carries weight

with warm tones lingering in the sky while shadows settled into the canyon walls

but of repetition and subtle change

and strange silhouettes rise from the desert floor
