Magnifique doesn't show a ton of artistic growth or progression

"I Learned the Hard Way" breezes with the cool assurance of Curtis Mayfield's Windy City and the instrumental "The Reason" shimmers like the sound of Philadelphia circa 1969

The Mamas & The Papas also brought their easy-listening harmonies to Leiber & Stoller's "Spanish Harlem" and Bobby Freeman's "Do You Wanna Dance

The ten songs from the powerful original album are performed in sequence

and a sloppy but brilliant attack that would inspire punk rock (without the punks ever getting its joyous slop quite right)

Rogers would become a very rich man

but also in the sense of grandeur and bombast intermittently found there and elsewhere

razor-sharp thrash metal with a distinctly Eastern European folk-inspired melodic sense and bizarrely humorous/politically incisive lyrics worthy of Frank Zappa or Jello Biafra

but it's hard not to single out the nearly unrecognizable cover of Janet Jackson's "What Have You Done for Me Lately

Korn's Jonathan Davis embellishes "1Stp Klosr" with his slow-boiling intensity
