In 1869, at the age of 18, he emigrated to America, eventually settling in Los Angeles, California. In 1882 he partnered with George Zobelein to purchase the Philadelphia Brewery of Los Angeles, and renamed it The Maier & Zobelein Brewing Company. Maier died at age 53 years on July 11, 1905.
