Quartz with “Amethyst” tipsThe Ouray Amphitheater has produced some of the most diverse and beautiful Quartz specimens from any locality in Colorado. This piece is one of the VERY few specimens of Amethyst that Ive seen from the Ouray Amphitheater. I love this piece, because its so different from what Im used to seeing from this area. The piece was collected by Robert Stoufer in 1992 and is one of the most unique and pleasing Quartz Amethyst specimens that I know of. First off,

The Black Cloud was one of the most famous specimen producing locales in Leadville and was one of the last operating mines in Colorado when it closed in 1999

and good display specimens of this material are next to impossible to find

even though it's not a complete crystal

This crystal has the good fortune of nearly lying flat when it formed

This mine is best known for its astoundingly fine Japan-Law twinned Quartz specimens
